Urban Green Areas as Cooling Safeguards

In March-August 2016 NGO “Green Wave” implemented the project “Management of urban green areas as an element of adaptation to climate change in cities.” The project analyzed the legal framework of creating and managing urban green zones, as well as estimated how to maintain green zones in a sustainable manner to ensure comfortable living of citizens under “heat waves” which nowadays occur in every big Ukrainian city due to climate change.

How to estimate the effectiveness of green zones in a city to face climate change? The project team used a method of thermal surface mapping of green

zones with drone and thermal camera in the hot summer period, estimating in parallel leaf CO2 fluxes for 5 Kyiv tree species under extremely …

    Sustainable Stockholm

Do you know how any city can be improved at eye level? How to make an ecological city tour? What kind of vegetarian food you can find in Stockholm and what can be done with used coffee after it has been put out from the coffee-machine? Four members of Ecoclub ‘Green Wave’ have explored all these things and many more during the 3-days visit organized by NGO “Global Playground Stockholm” in June 2016.

Due to financial support of the Olof Palme Memorial Fund (Sweden) both NGOs had a possibility to visit each other for experience exchange, setting up new contacts, and brainstorming the ideas of future common projects.

Core members of Global Playground Stockholm (Aleh Kliatsko, Stiva Liwiz, and Irina Mikhnovets) have guided …

Green Office project

[4 Feb 2021 | Comments: 0 | 176]

In the light of the current challenges presented by the pandemic and the significant economic losses sustained by the Ukrainian business community, the Green Office concept – environmentally conscious corporate culture and resource-effective office management (even when some of the staff members are working remotely) – can become an important tool to support organisations and a solution for the city’s ecosystem. The Green Office practices implemented by the Kyiv business community are described in the 2009 study  UN Global Compact ; however, no progress review has been conducted on systematic basis since then.

In October 2020, we decided to update the study and its findings will …

Together with the Climate Alphabet

[3 Feb 2021 | Comments: 0 | 240]

In spring 2020, Green Wave prepared a study paper: Environmental education for sustainable development on climate change in pre-school, secondary, out-of-school and higher education in Ukraine. Analysis of the current state of environmental and climate education delivered in formal secondary schools of Ukraine provided very pessimistic findings.

Our next step was to actively look for efficient ways to address the issue. We have jointly made a conclusion that solving an issue requires a consistent approach, and started creating such programs from scratch.

Our plans were supported by a grant from International Renaissance Foundation, and the first program was produced in autumn. It is intended …

Green areas in cities as cooling safeguards: the research results 2018

[5 Aug 2019 | Comments: 0 | 221]

An urban greening of courtyards in high-rise residential districts is crucial in forming a comfortable living environment for citizens. In this research made in Kyiv (July, August 2018), we estimated an adapting potential of urban green areas towards heat waves that much intensified recently in Ukraine due to climate change.

Under a pre-study, we analyzed visual and thermal satellite images of Kyiv to assess distribution of building density, greening density and surface temperature over residential districts. In hot days of 07/24 – 08/04 we explored thermal characteristics of four selected courtyards of a high-rise building residential zone in Kyiv, which had low building density and different …

Plocka upp: there is clean where we are jogging!

[7 Oct 2018 | Comments: 0 | 169]

In this article we would like to tell about an eco-initiative, which was launched by 61-year-old American comedian Devid Sedaris in Sweden. Once, in the morning he decided to take a bag for garbage with him for a walk, thus starting a world trend. First publications about this unusual activity appeared in Instagram back in Oktober 2016. The term “plogging” itself has roots from Swedish “plokka upp” – picking up and from English jogging accordingly. It has widespread not only in neighboring Germany and Denmark, but was also noticed even in distant countries of Latin America and South Asia.

So what does the idea imply? While …
